Nairobi, January 2004.--Being chauffeured around by a woman in Africa is an experience out of the ordinary. With Baraza, the extraordinary was laced with charm and tenderness. The most astounding thing was that a very short distance from the Westland neighborhood, there is this swath of coffe plantation near the International School of Nairobi. (Language: Swahili)
Too bad I got at the monasterary when the vast garden was closed to the public. The hand of plantains ripe for cooking dangling on a plantain tree shows the sheer diversity of plants in this monastery. On the walls could be seen among many other plates, two plates with Ave Marias in Swahili and Lingala (though they are too high-brow renditions not used in today's everyday mass).
Kinshasa, 2006.--This is a portion of a taxi ride from Victoire Place towards Bandal, more precisely through Saio Avenue. Those familiar with Kinshasa will recognize MAMA POTO industrial bread-maker. (Congolese soukous is playing on the car radio)
