Do you explorer file in file selection window? Spotlight is cool and column directory looks better than double-clicking folder icons.
If you open or browse file in other application. It is better to drag it to file selection sheet.
This movie shows tip to select file from other application in file selection sheet windows at Mac OS X.

A tip for selecting at your Mac OS X (later than Panther).
It is able to select text inside rectangle shape where you want.
Only holding "option" key and drag text, you'll get rectangle shape selected text.
