Kalmykia is the only Buddhist republic on European territory, and the Kalmyks follow the Tibetan branch of the religion. In the Soviet period most of their temples were destroyed; those that survive are treasured by locals. Founded in the 1860s, the capital Elista is a small city with a population of just 130,000 people.

This time Martyn Andrews goes swimming in Lake Baikal, the deepest in the world, and containing approximately 20 per cent of the worlds total surface fresh water. But swimming isnt the only entertainment there. Besides wonderful landscapes and pure nature, Baikal is a perfect place for kite-surfing, fishing, playing golf and cooking fish soup as proved by the Wayfarer himself.

In the next series Mark Ames visits Irkutsk, one of the largest cities in Siberia. He also travels to Lake Baikal, which contains over 20% of the world's fresh water and more than 90% of Russia's fresh water. Its age is estimated at 25-30 million years, making it one of the world's most ancient lakes. At the end of the journey, Mark learns how to cook smoked fish and tries a Russian banya.
